Students at Konnoak Middle School will soon be riding brand-new bicycles thanks to a community-wide effort led by the National Cycling Center, Salem Sports Events, Team Winston-Salem, and Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools.
Volunteers spent the day assembling 30 new bikes inside the school, transforming stacks of metal frames and loose parts into shiny, ready-to-ride bicycles. For many students, these aren’t just new toys, but tools that promote independence, physical activity, and safe transportation. The bike build is part of the Outride Grant Program, a national initiative that aims to improve the health and confidence of young people through cycling. Since 2014, Outride has partnered with more than 225 schools across the country, supporting over 170 cycling programs with more than $1.5 million in grants.
